A South Houston original
This place has seen a lot of breakfasts.
City Cafe is an independent breakfast and lunch restaurant at 513 College Ave, South Houston, TX 77587. It has served the neighborhood since 1952, which is long enough that regulars measure their own lives by it: first jobs, shift changes, Saturday mornings with kids who now bring their own.

How it started
City Cafe opened in 1952 on College Avenue, in the middle of South Houston. The year is still painted on the awning, and the restaurant has kept the same job ever since: breakfast early, lunch through the afternoon, coffee for anyone who sits down.
The building and the sign
The physical restaurant is the artifact here. The starburst sign out front is the landmark people navigate by, and inside there are booths, tables, a front counter and the wear that only comes from decades of service.
The people
Cooks and servers who know the regulars by order, and regulars who sit in the same spot every week. Families, shift workers and retirees have been passing through the same door since 1952.
City Cafe today
City Cafe still serves breakfast and lunch at 513 College Ave, Monday through Saturday, with a full menu and a steam table that changes by the day. Nothing about it has been rebranded or reinvented.
